Freeze dried products
Freeze dried fruits or even full meals but also pet food face increasing demand. Especially in the middle east and India, freeze dried full meals have taken a big part of the MRE – Ready-to-Eat Meals market. According to market research in Africa and Middle East the growth of freeze-dried food is 6.19% (CAGR)[1]. Also on European markets a growth of 7.3% CAGR [2]is expected for the next 10 years. Freeze dried pet food also is expected to grow by 5.5%[3].
So it seems obvious that investment into processing freeze drying products would be a good idea. For some years already there is an over capacity in the market and cheap producers increase this capacity. Over all, freeze drying seems from afar to be a (almost) fool-proof technology.
Raw materials – of course are always crucial, especially its freshness. Installing IQF-capacities for freezing goods in production countries like north Africa, eastern Europe, Turkey or south-east Asia seems a logical way to go. Freeze drying decreases not only the weight of the fruits to be transported but also the complexity of cold chain logistics.
Regarding freeze drying – there are big differences: A gentle drying – especially with temperature control and any avoidance of thawing the product is crucial for premium quality and maximum margin on sold products. Energy costs are the other big challenge to be faced. With ideal conditions – depending on the product (water content, size, fragility) energy usage can be optimised and leads to lower production costs. Experienced specialists can save a lot of money when the drying process is set for the first time. Another aspect is the reliability of the dryer in regard of accuracy of temperature and capacity for heating / cooling but also vacuum. The final aspect is owed to the loading and unloading process where time and workforce can be optimised too. We from food tech partners are very happy to share our knowledge and help you with improvements – independently of producers. However we have close contacts to producers and pick the most suitable for your needs. Feel free to contact us anytime.
